About California Medical Marijuana

The California Medical Marijuana program has been in effect since 1998. With just over a decade of under its belt, the state of California has accumulated the largest number of medical marijuana patients in the country with over 750,000 medical marijuana cardholders. The California medical marijuana movement is largely credited with helping many other states get their medical marijuana programs underway. California has always been a major voice for medical marijuana advocacy and overall marijuana legalization. Ballot Proposition 215, approved in November of 1996 by 56% of the voters, removed state-level criminal penalties for marijuana related offenses. Prop 215 has been a leading example for other states that have since implemented medical marijuana programs.
