School District in El Paso County approves medical marijuana use

El Paso County, Colorado district board passed "Jax's Policy" this week, allowing child patients to bring their non-smokable medical marijuana on school property to be administered by a parent or caregiver. The board voted 5-0 to pass the bill after High School 11th-grader Jax Storms was suspended for bringing his cannabis oil to school, a medicine he desperately needs to fight his seizures from a rare condition, Dravet Syndrome. Jax has undergone 2 brain surgeries and over 60 combinations of drugs, none of which eased the seizures, until he tried cannabis oil. Not only did the medical marijuana oil treat his seizures almost immediately, but now that the bill has passed this policy will help 40 other students with similar conditions who need access to their medical marijuana during school days. 

"Sand Creek High School 11th-grader Jackson 'Jaxs' Stormes, 16, was suspended in May 2015 for carrying cannabis oil to school as a seizure treatment," the district said. "Jaxs suffers from Dravet Syndrome, a rare and catastrophic form form of intractable epilepsy, as well as Juvenile Parkinson's Disease."

The bill says schools, with district approval, can permit non-smokeable marijuana medicines and the drug is administered by a caregiver or parent.
