Where to visit in silver spring

Woodside

The oldest part of Silver Springs, Woodside, traces its history as far back as 1840, when the Blair family constructed the first buildings in the area, seeking a summertime escape from the heat and humidity of D.C. The Woodside United Methodist Church is the town’s oldest, dating to 1872 – although it is no longer on its original site, as the entire building was moved across the street by horses on rollers 20 years later to avoid the railroads. Woodside has many historic sites and centers for those who appreciate the city, state, and nation’s past.

Downtown

Like many modest-sized cities, the downtown area of Silver Springs is where most of the action takes place. Most of the city’s museums, music sites, and theaters are in this neighborhood, along with most upscale restaurants. Since the downtown touches the edges of Washington D.C. proper, you can hop over the city lines to pick up recreational cannabis – so long as you consume it on that side of the state line too.

Acorn Park

The site of the famous park where the city founders discovered a spring (now gone dry), Acorn Park, is small but memorable. Since it draws tourists, it has lots of quick places to eat and shop; while some are worth the effort, some others are not much better than fast food or trinket shops you can find anywhere else in greater D.C.

Silver Spring is nowhere near New York City in size or culture, but Parkway Deli is a small slice of traditional New York Jewish delis. Abyssinia

One of many Ethiopian restaurants in the city, Abyssinia (so named for Ethiopia’s ancient history), is considered the best. Diners get to eat multiple courses on a single piece of giant flatbread, which is torn off and consumed along with the entrees themselves. Visitors who have never tried Ethiopian food may find the lack of silverware a bit odd but will be more than happy with meal options like lamb and sambusa pastries.
