Where to visit in calgary

Beltline

Source: Oyd

Calgary’s Beltline neighborhood, located just south of downtown, is considered one of the top neighborhoods in the city. For many years, it would’ve been the place to only go to eat and drink but now it’s a hotspot for nightlife and urban culture within the city. Whether you want to shop or just hang out and people watch, Beltline is a thriving and well-rounded neighborhood filled with young people, families and older people alike.

International Avenue

Got the munchies? Head over to International Avenue, a street that bills itself as “Calgary’s culinary and cultural capital.” This neighborhood has been developed in recent years, shedding its reputation as a rougher area in the city yet maintaining much of the diversity in the process. “You can wander into a store and be totally transported to another place,” Alison Karim-McSwiney recently told the Calgary Journal. “The items are unique, because they’re small businesses.”

Eau Claire

If you’ve recently consumed and are looking for somewhere to go, Eau Claire is a great spot to check out, especially in the summertime when you can walk along the Bow River path network. It’s also the site of many of the city’s most popular music festivals, including Calgary Folk Music Festival and Carifest. Don’t forget to visit the Eau Claire Market, which has a handful of great pubs and restaurants.

Inglewood

Weed and music obviously go together, so Calgary’s Inglewood neighborhood should be high on the list for any elevated tourists. The historic area is known as the city’s hub for local music and is home to a constant lineup of local festivals, art and exhibitions. It sits at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers and offers natural attractions like the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery.

What to do in calgary

Take a Day Trip to the Drumheller Badlands

Source: Stefancik

If you’re anything like most marijuana smokers, you’ve toked up and stumbled down an internet rabbit hole, likely searching for volcanoes, puppies or dinosaurs. If the latter appeals to you, no trip to Calgary would be complete without a stop at the gorgeous Drumheller Badlands. It’s about an hour outside of town so if you plan on smoking weed then it would be best to hop on a scenic tour bus – there are several options, including Hammerhead Scenic Tours. The tour takes around 10 hours and includes stops on the North Dinosaur Trail, the largest dinosaur fossil in the world and the surreal Badlands Hoodoos rock formations.

Stroll Around the Devonian Gardens

If looking at long-baked dinosaur bones isn’t really your speed, then maybe your stoned style is more focused on lush greenery. Thankfully, there’s plenty to see at the Devonian Gardens. The indoor botanical oasis in the heart of the city has over 500 trees, 50 varieties or plants, and a small waterfall. It’s great way to be outside, even if the weather is kind of crummy.

Get Cosmic at the Telus Spark Science Centre

If you’re still feeling adventurous and want to find another fun activity that’s out of this world, the Telus Spark Science Centre will certainly fit the bill. It has a massive planetarium-style theatre, live demonstrations and info about the history of Calgary and Alberta. If you’re travelling with kids, this is a must-see.

Stay Up Late at the Plaza Theatre

Depending on when you’re in town, you might be able to catch an edition of Late Night at the Plaza. It’s an adults-only, live variety show that promotes local artists and performers. It’s hard to say what exactly to expect since each episode is different; one night it could be comedy, and the next month it could be an in-depth interview. This fun event is held once a month, so check out their website to see if you can luck out.

The titular ‘PM’ in the name of this dispensary doesn’t stand for the afternoon but instead, “premium market” — exactly what 420PM believes they can be for the cannabis industry. They’ve been involved with lots of local initiatives, including the Calgary Folk Fest and an Adult Night at the Telus Spark Science Centre and aim to break stigmas attached to cannabis use. This dispensary is a slick-looking place to buy your weed, so be sure to stop by one of their many locations. Address: Multiple Locations

Where to Shop / Arts in calgary

TRUCK Contemporary Arts

Source: Truck Website

TRUCK is one of Canada’s top contemporary galleries, and one that is unabashedly proud of its hometown. It’s also a gallery that’s pushing boundaries in the city and reminding it of the long artistic traditions of the Indigenous peoples who live there. They also curate local events, like a bike-in outdoor movie night. It’s definitely a gallery that trades in conceptual, heady contemporary art — so, maybe something to pair with a cerebral, sativa smoke.

Kensington Konsignment

If high concept art isn’t your bag when you’re high, maybe thrift shopping is — and who doesn’t love the feeling of combing through old clothing in search of a treasured find? Kensington Konsignment is a new consignment-clothing store in the city and offers a wide variety of clothing to check out. It’s known to be the kind of thrift shop that can be overwhelming due to it’s large size, so stop by if you’re looking for somewhere to get a bit giggly while trying on new clothes.

The Next Level

Who doesn’t love looking at bongs and glass? The shiny, otherworldly quality of bong shopping has a certain hypnotic effect; it can be very easy to get swept up in it, since this experience is part shopping and part art appreciation. Check out The Next Level, on 17th Avenue, for all your smoke-shopping needs. If you’re coming from out of the country, it’d make a great stop for you early in the trip to stock up on accessories; if you’re not coming in from very far away, it’s a good spot to pick up gifts to give to your smoking friends back home.

Where to Eat in calgary

Cluck N Cleaver

Cluck N Cleaver essentially does one thing: southern fried chicken. In our opinion, there’s no better food to satisfy the munchies than a plate of fried chicken with biscuits. It can be sweet, spicy, savory, crunchy, chewy and succulent at the same time. For the money, this makes Cluck N Cleaver the best spot to go to satisfy some stoned munchies. Address: 1511 14th St.

Sidewalk Citizen Bakery

If you’re planning a day by the river and want a more Parisian snack, Sidewalk Citizen is a great option. You can try some artisan bread or some baked goods, or something off of their sandwich menu with features such as a Roast Beef & Gruyere melt or a Roasted Broccoli and Avocado sandwich.
