Established within Fells Point in 1775, this saloon is the home to nearly 250 years of history and one game-changing claim: this saloon was the final place Edgar Allen Poe visited before his mysterious death in 1849. Known as “The Horse” to locals, this saloon is the only bar in Maryland that was open before the prohibition and is still serving up some quality drinks, live music, and delicious bar food in an old-timey atmosphere.

If you’re a cityscape explorer, history junky, or a fan of the bizarre, go check out Fort Armistead. This old military base was completed in 1901 and used on-and-off throughout the world wars.  Since its closure after World War II, Fort Armistead has been taken over by surrounding wildlife, turned into a park, and riddled with graffiti. This isn’t a place you want to take a picnic, but the subterranean tunnels and old decayed storerooms make for an eerie outing for those wanting a bit of haunt.

A Baltimore nonprofit, The Book Thing of Baltimore is essentially a giant free library. Located about three miles north of downtown, this book store accepts used book donations to build their growing collection. You can go in and browse tens of thousands of books and take a few for free – they won’t take a single cent from you. All they ask is that you perhaps trade in a book of your own. After (or before) you visit, check out the very worthwhile Peabody Heights Breweryright next door.

Established in 1782, this is one of the oldest markets in America. Here, you’ll find everything from amazing food (Angie’s BBQ, Buttercup Bakery, Dudley’s Fries, Cho’s Sea Garden, etc.), eclectic electronic stores, and an array of other odds-and-ends shops (Cynthia’s Cosmetics, Downtown Tobacco Outlet, Kofman’s Shoe Repair, etc.) With a total of 67 different vendors, this market probably has something you don’t even know you’re looking for.

Established in 1943, they claim to be Baltimore’s first pizzeria and have had plenty of time to master their outstanding pies, which are a combo style between NY and Chicago deep-dish pizza. You can even grab a frozen pizza to go for when the munchies hit later, or even pick up an Italian sub or pasta dish. Bottom line - if you’re craving pizza and find yourself over near Patterson Park in Canton, this is the place to check out.
