Recreational marijuana now legal in Vermont as new law takes effect

Legalization Posted Jun 30 2018

Vermont's recreational marijuana law went into effect this week, but legalization in Vermont will look a little different than many other states that have passed laws. Even though the use of marijuana by adults is now legal in Vermont, the law does not account for any sale or taxation of the plant, though it does allow for regulators to put a system in place in the future. Vermont was the 9th state to legalize the plant, however it was the first to do it through legislators voting on and passing the bill as opposed to every other state passing the laws through voter referendums.  Vermont adults can now possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis, 2 mature plants and 4 immature plants.

Vermont became the ninth state in the country, along with Washington, D.C, to allow the recreational use of marijuana. The other states and Washington authorized the recreational use of marijuana through a vote of residents. Vermont law contains no mechanism that allows for a citizen referendum
