New Bill Would Allow North Carolinians To Possess Up To 4 Ounces Of Marijuana

North Carolinians have greatly changed their viewpoints on legalizing cannabis in some forms in only the last 5 years or so according to a new survey. The typically conservative state is now moving it's way towards a majority of voters supporting legalizing all forms of cannabis, but not just yet. The survey showed that 80% of participants support legalizing medical marijuana, but support for recreational cannabis is down at 45%. Even though the 45% supporting full legalization isn't a majority, it is a huge improvement on the past and shows a shift in how people view the plant. A new bill was proposed in the North Carolina House this week that would allow adults to possess up to 4 ounces of cannabis legally. If caught with anything over 4 ounces the offender can be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor. The bill also allows for those previously convicted of cannabis possession of less than 4 ounces to petition to get their record expunged.

That's the goal of a new House Bill, which was filed this week and was just sent to a committee for review. If this bill is voted on and approved, having four ounces or less of marijuana would be OK.

The bill's sponsor is a longtime proponent of legalizing marijuana. Rep. Kelly Alexander says making small amounts of marijuana legal to carry is a step in the right direction.
