Marijuana ‘can be helpful’ for some medical conditions, surgeon general says

The new Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, has strong feelings about the current status of marijuana and is hoping to address the obvious flaws, such as the 23 states with legal medical marijuana programs while marijuana is still under Schedule 1 classification (no medicinal value and high potential for abuse). However, marijuana is still illegal under federal law meaning patients and providers are still vulnerable to federal law enforcement.

“It's crazy that federal law still considers marijuana a Schedule I drug, a category that's supposed to be reserved for substances with no medical value. In light of these comments from his top medical adviser, the president should direct the attorney general to immediately begin the process of rescheduling marijuana.”
