Unfortunately for those looking to toke up while visiting the Hawkeye state, cannabis remains essentially illegal. The state has tried several times to legalize medicinal marijuana but has only legalized up to 4.5 grams of THC in total for patients in a 90 day period. The state is also exploring ways to decriminalize cannabis, but has not signed anything into law. Those caught with cannabis can face a $1000 fine and up to six months in jail. Note that it is also illegal to carry marijuana across state lines, so those visiting Illinois should not bring marijuana back over the border.
