With I-190 going into effect on January 1, 2021, here’s what we know about the legal marijuana market in Ennis so far. As of January 1, adults over the age of 21 could legally possess up to an ounce of cannabis flower or 8 grams of concentrates. Additionally, adult users could begin growing marijuana plants at home. Unfortunately, the state hasn’t allowed sales yet and won’t even begin to accept licenses until October 2021. So, while possession is legal, purchasing recreational marijuana is still illegal. When sales do begin, I-190 also sets the Montana recreational marijuana sales tax at 20%, with 10.5% allocated toward the state General Fund and the remaining 9.5% for local programs. Of course, since the state legalized medical marijuana back in 2004, Montana MMJ cardholders can already purchase from dispensaries at a much lower rate than recreational users will in 2022.
