Like the rest of Montana, lawmakers in Great Falls haven’t determined the city’s specific recreational cannabis regulations because they only passed in the 2020 election. This law, I-190 went into effect on January 1, 2021, and let adults who were 21 possess up to an ounce of cannabis flower or 8 grams of concentrates. Additionally, adults can grow several plants at home. I-190 also sets recreational sales tax for marijuana at 20%, but the timeline this law sets means that sales will take a while to begin. In October, the state will start accepting recreational dispensary applications and won’t start granting them until 2022. Of course, medical marijuana has been legal since 2004 in Montana, so medical cannabis patients can legally buy from dispensaries now.
