Weed and waterfalls go together quite well and Hamilton is the perfect base for exploring the over 120 waterfalls that surround the town. The majority are near the Bruce Trail along the imposing Niagara Escarpment and are easily accessed from the city center. The Escarpment cuts through the middle of Hamilton and is responsible for the variety of falls that range from dramatic and huge to tranquil and small. Most are free to access but some require a small parking fee. Some of the more popular falls are Webster’s Falls, the 120-foot drop of Devils Punchbowl and the perfectly balanced cascade of Princess Falls. Don’t miss Sherman Falls – they are breathtaking 60-foot curtain-style falls that are spectacular regardless of the season.

This cool museum in downtown was created in the late 1980s to “preserve, honour and promote the culture and history of all working people” in the province of Ontario. It is housed in the historic Customs House and uses art installations and performances to recognize the contributions of Canadian workers. The exhibits on 19th century factories in Ontario are particularly interesting. The Centre is open from 10 am – 4 pm Wednesday to Saturday.

The beautiful mid-size facility with a soaring glassed lobby has been a key part of the city’s revitalization and hosts excellent local productions as well as traveling shows. It has a strong community presence with outreach and educational programs and is one of the easier venues to navigate since it is downtown and has plenty of free parking nearby. The onsite bar is reasonably priced and the comfortable size of the space provides every seat with a great view of the stage.

After some initial issues with supply, the shop is now firing on all cylinders. The store is clean and bright and is filled with a wide selection of flower and edibles. Most of the flower is from local Ontario purveyors like Haven St. and is provided by a knowledgeable and professional staff. The Canadian government is slowly legalizing THC vaping products but as of now you will not find them in legally licensed cannabis stores. Address: 1317 Barton St E, Unit H09, Hamilton, ON

Born and Raised

Wood-fired pizza and seafood from both coasts draw crowds to this welcoming spot in the James Street corridor. Chef Vittorio Colacitti is a Hamilton native (hence the name of his place) and while the menu skews Italian, there is a strong Latin influence in some of the seafood dishes like scallops and octopus. Cocktails are well-crafted and generous and there is a fine selection of digestifs.

Quatrefoil

Quatrefoil is in a quaint converted house just off the main drag in Dundas and serves French-inspired fare with a reserved elegance. This is Hamilton’s place for anniversaries, weddings and other celebratory meals, and all aspects of the operation are done with class. Breads are baked in-house and ingredients are sourced from local purveyors. Standout dishes tend to revolve around Canadian fish such as Arctic char and rainbow trout from Manitoba, but the duck is also excellent, and the kitchen knows how to properly present succulent sweetbreads. The dining room is an ornate yet tasteful oasis but consider getting a table on the lovely outdoor patio in the warmer months.

The Burnt Tongue

The Burnt Tongue has their system down to a science. Soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and fries are the only options on the menu, and they are all exceptional. It’s fresh and healthy fast food and is perfect for curing any immediate food needs, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free. The delicious soups vary from the unconventional (Senegalese yam peanut, samosa, curried spinach and goat cheese) to the traditional comfort (French onion, clam chowder, chicken noodle) and rarely do any disappoint. Patrons are welcome to ask for samples of any soup prior to ordering. Pull up for a gooey grilled cheese and a bowl of hot soup after a day at the falls and you’ll be all set.
