Spokane’s downtown has an excellent array of well-preserved historic buildings and several restaurants and cultural attractions that draw visitors from around the region. The Historic Davenport Hotel has been restored to its former opulence and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the Pacific Northwest. The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox is a wonderful example of art-deco design from the early 1930s and is home to the Spokane Symphony as well as touring musicians and shows. Spokane Falls rumble through downtown and can be enjoyed from above via the Numerica SkyRide gondola. It’s a unique and fun 15-minute ride across the river and back to Riverfront Park. After a day exploring downtown, tuck into one of the many excellent breweries or eateries that inhabit the blocks south of the falls.

Browne’s Addition

Directly west of downtown is an area known as Browne’s Addition. It is the oldest neighborhood in the city and is filled with lovingly restored homes, hip shops and eclectic eateries. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture is here (see below), along with The Elk Public House and two exceptional urban parks. Overlook Park has great views over Hangman Valley and Coeur d’Alene Park hosts summer concerts in its band pavilion and also has tennis courts and horseshoe pits. It’s a fine place for a picnic.

Manito Park

This gem of a park is a wonderful place to spend a mellow afternoon. There are extensive walking trails that connect all of the different sections like the rose garden, the duck pond and the tranquil and meditative Japanese garden. Manito Park also has a few playgrounds that families will enjoy. Duncan Garden is another section of the park that resembles the gardens of Versailles with its renaissance-style design and formal layout spread across three acres.

Riverside State Park

This 10,000 acre park attracts visitors with its beautiful vistas, over 55 miles of hiking and biking trails and abundant wildlife. Ducks, geese, deer, ospreys, marmots, bear and even moose can be found in this wonderland just north of downtown. Rent a canoe and hit the rivers or go for a horseback ride through the forest. The options for outdoor fun are abundant. Be sure to explore the area around the famous Bowl and Pitcher. They are massive blocks of basaltic rocks that look uncannily like common kitchen items.

Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture

Known by locals as the “MAC,” this museum in the city’s Browne’s Addition neighborhood is one of Washington State’s five Smithsonian affiliates and has a prominent collection of local Native American artifacts and other exhibitions that focus on the history and heritage of the region. The Campbell House is a 13,000 square foot mansion built in 1898 that provides a fascinating glimpse of early 20th century life in Spokane. The museum’s café is a fine place for a light meal set in a sun-drenched dining room and if you’re in town on a Thursday the monthly Thursday Night Love series is a fun night out with live music in the outdoor amphitheater and special access to the exhibits.

Wiley E. Waters White Water Rafting

There are not many major metropolitan areas where visitors can enjoy whitewater rapids in the center of a city! Wiley E. Waters is a top outfitter that runs trips through Class I-III rapids on the Spokane River – including the famous Devil’s Toenail and the Bowl and Pitcher formations – right in the middle of downtown Spokane. Rushes of adrenaline will accompany the peaks and valleys of the rapids but the trips are also arranged to allow for downtime to float quietly and relax and enjoy the scenery. Trips last around two to three hours; the Wine & Dine Float featuring appetizers and fine wines from around the state is justifiably popular.

Lucky Leaf is conveniently located on the western side of downtown Spokane and is known for stocking quality product produced and processed in Washington State at reasonable prices. The staff is kind and supportive with an educational inclination and there are normally incredible sales and deals on select items, such as 1/8ths of solid strains for $10. Lucky Leaf has hard to find CBD topicals and edibles and the open and spacious layout creates a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Don’t let The Hidden Joint’s out of the way location keep you from making a visit to this great dispensary that opened in 2016. Its relatively small selection is carefully curated and keeps visitors from being overwhelmed with options. Hidden Joint’s owners visit their producers and processors to pick the best flower and edibles to sell in the shop and the modest selection is more than compensated by the low prices on everything the dispensary carries. The dispensary has a corner store vibe that the locals love and is in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by trees and grass that make a trip to The Joint a mellow experience. Lucid is a clean and well-run dispensary with a polite and knowledgeable staff that many stoners in Spokane consider to be a hidden gem. The small building with an exterior of dark wooden siding seems quaintly appropriate for this part of the country and the inside is just as attractive with beautiful wooden cases and displays. The shop is packed with flower of consistent quality and the best pre-rolls in town. Lucid also has an ample assortment of edibles, concentrates and topicals and makes sure that certain strains are always available for regular medical customers. There are also discounts for veterans and seniors.

Lolo is a lovely boutique in downtown that specializes in eclectic women’s clothing at affordable prices. The patterns and colors of the store’s garments are vibrant and exciting and exude a hippie-chic vibe. Lolo carries innovative brands like Threads 4 Thought, Hobo and Wanderlux and there are also bath and body items such as imported French soaps and Boy Smells’ Kush Candles featuring notes of cannabis, white musk, suede and tulip. In the summer months, Lolo expands outdoors with a great selection of garden items.

Saranac Art Projects

Founded in 2007 with a goal of bringing more color and life to Spokane’s arts scene, Saranac Art Projects is a nonprofit art collective with a fascinating gallery in downtown’s Saranac Building that shows diverse and provocative works from local and regional artists. Modern sculptures and paintings make up most of the pieces in the classy artist-owned space but there are also brilliant modern photography exhibitions that utilize new techniques and unexpected materials. This gallery should be a stop on any downtown excursion. Open Thursdays from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Echo is a high-end consignment store in a gorgeous exposed brick space directly across from the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox on 1st Street in Downtown Spokane. The clothing and shoes are so gently used, well kept and fashionable that it’s easy to forget that everything for sale is second-hand. The diverse and tastefully crafted selection of designer labels extends to accessories and jewelry yet each item remains accessible and affordable. The staff is relaxed, courteous and professional.

Owner Bob Gallagher has been bringing music to the masses for over 30 years at this iconic Spokane record store that specializes in Beatles records and memorabilia ("Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire...") but also sells a broad assortment of new and used vinyl, new and used CDs and hard to find imports. You could spend hours browsing the vast and well-organized inventory or by simply chatting with Gallagher about what’s new and what’s good. Everything is reasonably priced and there are even Yellow Submarine action figures for sale.

Wiley’s is an unpretentious yet professional spot in downtown that is great for a comfortable lunch or dinner. The menu focuses on New American cuisine and specializes in seafood dishes like prawn linguini and dry-rubbed salmon with a ginger glaze. The duck confit is also excellent and the extensive list of specialty cocktails – classified as “up,” “down” and “sideways” – seems to go on forever. Owner Michael Wiley often checks in on diners to make sure their experience is enjoyable.

Diners in railroad cars are a dying breed but Frank’s does a great job of keeping the tradition alive. It’s the classic setup of a breakfast counter with booths lining the dining car and the friendly ambience is complemented by the impressive cuisine. Traditional diner dishes are taken to a new level and the quality of the presentation is unexpectedly dignified. Due to Frank’s appeal there is often a wait to get a seat, but coffee and water are provided to help pass the time.

Domini Sandwiches

Domini’s is the place to go in Spokane for quality deli sandwiches. A sandwich shop for over 50 years, this is the type of joint where people walk in knowing exactly what they want. Huge New York-style sandwiches dominate the menu and don’t even bother asking for any vegetables. There are none. Pastrami, corned beef, ham, salami, liverwurst and turkey are all sold by the sandwich, the basket and the pound and mustards, horseradish, cheeses and soup round out the streamlined menu.

Wild Sage

Wild Sage presents “Regionally Sourced Northwest Cuisine” in three refined and airy dining areas. The walls of windows provide a wonderful setting for delicious dishes like chardonnay poached pear and Idaho rainbow trout with anchovy-caper butter, rosemary-parmesan polenta and rustic arrabiata. The restaurant has been drawing diners in search of high-end cuisine since it opened in 2006 and if anything, the quality of the entire experience has only improved over the years.
