If the last remaining Woolworth’s lunch counter in the country is not enough to draw you to this stretch of downtown Bak-o (what the locals call their town), then the sheer number of vintage shops and antique stores on this strip certainly will. Set designers and film industry types can often look for items to fill their sets with retro furniture and decor on the lots back in Los Angeles. A full day on this special strip of independent businesses might not be enough.

Spread across 32 acres just west of downtown on the Kern River, this unique park offers a lovely break from Bakersfield’s urban footprint. Enjoy the two lakes – the upper covers three acres and surrounds the Spectrum Amphitheater (home to regular concerts) – and a stone creek bed leads down to the two-acre lower lake. Super dog-friendly, this is the spot to relax in the shade or go for a jog.

A night out at Kern County Raceway Park is always a good time, even if you are not a racing fan. With both asphalt and dirt tracks, the action never stops. The constant buzz of motorcycles, wing cars, and stock cars is a rush. The half-mile NASCAR oval is the main attraction, but there is also a motocross track where bikes shoot into the air on massive jumps. Throw in some fireworks and hot dogs, and it will be a night that will not be soon forgotten. The Raceway also hosts drive-in movies, car shows, and 4H livestock displays.

This unique zoo opened in 1983 with a mission of education, conservation, and research. The focus is on birds, mammals, and reptiles that are non-releasable due to injury. All plants and animals are native to California and spread across several park-like acres. The zoo has a fascinating breeding relationship with the Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos, allowing it to exhibit endangered desert bighorn sheep. The Cats of California exhibit has stunning bobcats and mountain lions. The acronym is fitting – CALM is a relaxed spot perfect for strolling and learning about California’s flora and fauna.

Except for “Where to Buy Marijuana,” this entry would fit easily into all the categories in this city guide. The Crystal Palace is the one-stop shop for music, food, and fun. Most exhibits are dedicated to Owens’ life and include his snazzy suits and guitars. Some stations honor other musicians who practiced the Bakersfield Sound and excellent live performances nightly. Take a line dancing lesson if you are so inclined. The restaurant is surprisingly fantastic – the chicken fried steak is divine.

Visitors to Bakersfield will quickly notice many Basque eateries in town. Bakersfield is home to the most extensive collection of Basque restaurants in the United States, a reminder of the scores of immigrants who came from Europe in the 19th century searching for gold in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The cuisine is based on thick and hearty sauces, and Benji’s is the pick of the litter with expertly balanced creations. Expect a family-style feast spread over many courses, with bread, soup, vegetables, French fries, and noodles followed by plenty of meats like lamb and chicken. The calamari and scallops are also excellent.

Clocking in at over 80 years old, “The Cat” is a dive bar deservedly revered as a Bakersfield institution. With a cash-only policy and atmosphere to burn, Guthrie’s is a timeless joint that will get crowded and a bit raucous as the evening progresses. There is no food available, but the occasional food truck and the ability to grab a pizza or burger from Jerry’s next door and eat in the bar make this a great place to enjoy Bakersfield’s wild side.
