Where to visit in lake tahoe

North Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe, where the black and grey streaked granite cliffs meet the ice-blue waters of the lake, is one of the most idyllic landscapes in North America. With a population far smaller than its southern sister, this portion of Tahoe has a mountain-town vibe that provides visitors with a more ‘wild’ tour of the lake. If you are looking to escape the squalor of the city and get lost in the dense pine forests, North Lake Tahoe is the place to go.

South Lake Tahoe

The major citizenery of Lake Tahoe can be found here, at South Lake Tahoe. The highlight of the area is the California-Nevada border, which very nearly splits the lake down the middle. The south-shore border hosts world class resorts and shopping on the CA side and glamorous, flashy casinos on its Nevada’s portion. The massive hotels, casinos, restaurants and bars may cause you to forget you are currently deep in the heart of the Sierra Mountains at the largest alpine lake in America. The big-city vibe offered here will not be found anywhere else in Tahoe, so if your searching for a lively night out, south lake has what you’re looking for.

Vikingsholm

Long before the tech magnates of Silicon Valley bought vacation homes around the shores of Lake Tahoe, Ben Holiday built one of the lake’s first Summer homes on the shores of Emerald Bay in the latter portion of the 1860s. The nordic buildings of Vikinsholm were built on a small island in the middle of Emerald Bay, constructed to be reminiscent of the Viking castles of Scandinavia. Once a utopic summer home, the castle is now deserted and available for tours, either by kayak or boat. Many locals consider Emerald Bay to be the most scenic portion of Tahoe’s shoreline, with Vikingsholm in the very center of the bay. Even if you decide not to take a boating tour of the castle, there are many vantage points to view Vikingsholm from the roadway above Emerald Bay.
