While many think of the nation’s capital when they think of Washington, D.C., there is so much more to do in the metropolitan area than visit the government buildings. With the entire Smithsonian Museum system available to see (and most are free!), four professional sports teams, and plenty of neighborhoods to explore, D.C. has something for everyone. We recommend spending the day visiting the Hirshorn Museum followed by a stop at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Then, head over to the Wharf for some amazing seafood and plenty of bars and entertainment options. For a more extensive overview of the city, check out our D.C. Travel Guide!
Although Washington D.C. legalized cannabis for both medical and adult-use in 2015, the laws can be a bit complicated. While cultivation and possession were legalized, selling marijuana for recreational use in DC was unfortunately not. That being said, it is legal to gift marijuana and some have taken advantage of this workaround. Otherwise, there are several medical marijuana dispensaries that can be used to purchase cannabis with a valid MMJ card. Given its proximity to DC, it should also be noted that Virginia recently legalized adult-use cannabis. While anyone over 21 may possess up to one ounce of cannabis and grow up to four plants, dispensaries won't be open in the state until 2024.
