CBD has eclipsed the entire market today as we know it and is practically impossible to get away from. There is CBD in pet stores, your local grocery store and everywhere in between. With the rise of such a therapeutic product, people are looking to have access to it 24/7, including when traveling. Many people already have anxieties accompany flying, and now they are often worried and unsure of whether or not traveling with CBD oil is allowed. There is still much confusion surrounding the legality of it, so here are some dos and don'ts of flying with CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the most prominent cannabinoids that is found within the cannabis plant. While THC, the most famous cannabinoid, is known for the psychoactive effects that accompany weed, CBD on the other hand is known to have no psychoactive effects whatsoever. CBD can be derived from both cannabis and hemp, which is often where the confusion comes into play about this compound. In 2018 when the Farm Bill was passed, the restriction on cultivation and sales on hemp and CBD products lead to broad cultivation across the country.

Because CBD does not have any psychoactive feelings, it is used for alternative medical purposes that hold a wide range of symptom relief. The therapeutic benefits coupled with the Farm Bill passing have caused an explosion onto the market of all things CBD.

CBD Oil Benefits

We know that CBD has a plethora of therapeutic benefits and research is still in its infancy, hoping to unlock even more ways that this compound can help us. To understand the way CBD aids the body, we must know how it works within the endocannabinoid system. CBD has an affinity to bind with the CB2 receptor, yet doesn't always directly bind with it. CBD instead can organically enhance naturally occurring levels of endocannabinoids within the body, which then in turn aids in homeostasis and keeps all bodily functions running smoothly. This compound is especially great in response to stress, which is why CBD oil for anxiety is so popular. When you are feeling stressed, CBD can actively regulate signals in the brain to help calm you down. If you've ever been anxious when traveling, turn to this remedy.

Outside of being paramount for a nervous flyer, CBD can aid in PTSD, MS, epilepsy, anxiety, skin disorders and insomnia.

With CBD being such a new product on the market and with the legality in states being different, there is still much confusion surrounding what you can and cannot do when it comes to bringing CBD on flights. However, the nervous flyer is in luck. A passenger is allowed to bring CBD onto flights, as long as it is derived from hemp, which will contain less than 0.3% THC. The distinction with hemp-derived is an important one, as CBD derived from cannabis may have a THC content that is higher than 0.3%, which is not allowed in the air

Like any other liquids, it's always key to follow TSA's 3-1-1 rule. In your carry-on, you are allowed to bring one quart-sized bag of liquids, gels or aerosols through the checkpoint. These are limited to 3.4 ounces or less per item. According to TSA, CBD oil does not need to be declared.

Some things to Remember

Even though it's allowed in the air, it is a good idea to check CBD laws of where you will be arriving as well to avoid any legal issues. If you're worried about TSA, you can also print out the product's lab report to show that the product falls within the guidelines. TSA has openly stated that they are not actively looking for drugs when people are going through the checkpoint. What is paramount is any sort of safety threats, like weapons or bombs. So this should help you breathe easier.

Can You Travel with CBD Internationally?

When it comes to international travel, we suggest that you err on the side of caution. International rules and regulations on CBD aren't as clear, but if you really need your CBD, make sure you have done the proper research for that country. Most European countries have legalized the product on some level, but caution is always key.

FAQs of Flying with CBD

Will dogs smell CBD?

No, security dogs are there to mostly be sniffing for major security threats. They are trained to smell terpenes in cannabis, but CBD typically has such a low terpene profile that it won't be detected

Can you use CBD at the airport?

Yes, it is legal to fly and is also legal to use, as long as it is hemp-derived CBD with less than 0.3% THC. It is just like taking an anti-anxiety or anti-inflammatory capsule pre-flight.

Can you bring weed on a plane?

As we know, there is now CBD flower available for purchase. We don't suggest bringing this onto a flight, as it is too similar looking to cannabis and only lab results would show the difference. Besides, you couldn't light up in the airport even if you wanted to.

Is CBD derived from cannabis allowed?

No, CBD derived from cannabis is subject to state laws and is considered illegal federally, whereas CBD derived from hemp is legal. Leave that stuff at home!
