Does Marijuana Make You Forget to Remember?

Those who enjoy cannabis have been plagued with negative stereotypes for years. Despite there being a common stereotype of cannabis consumers being lazy or forgetful there is now research to squash these negative qualities and show that cannabis has nothing to do with that. There are different types of memories that the brain stores and recalls and while cannabis deserves more research in many places, researchers have proven that common legal drugs like alcohol and prescription pain kilers are harmful to prospective memory. A study performed in the UK showed that regular cannabis consumers remember daily tasks and events just as often as non-smokers do.

The participants played a game called Virtual Week that mimicked typical daily life scenarios. Throughout each virtual day, participants were assigned a number of tasks that they had to remember to perform at later points in the game.

The two groups scored similarly on the game, correctly recalling their tasks about 80 percent of the time, the study found. Additional tests also revealed no differences between groups in episodic memory, the type of memory that records past events.
