The Most Popular Strains in Each State: Part 2

Published on 9/26/22

Each state has a different best-selling strain you're most likely to find in dispensaries, and this is due to a variety of factors. Are you curious about what the most popular weed strains are in your state? Take a look at the second entry of our ongoing series about the most trending strains in each state!

Cannabis in the United States

While we're using this series to go through every state's most popular cannabis strain, that doesn't mean cannabis is yet legal in every state in the United States. Cannabis is still federally illegal, and a total of 12 states have yet to legalize it in any form (including medical marijuana). That being said, as of August 2022, a total of 37 states have legalized medical cannabis. That means a vast majority of states have legalized medical marijuana, while 19 of those states (plus Washington, D.C.) have legalized recreational cannabis. Additionally, new polls show that 90% of Americans believe that medical cannabis should be legalized, with 60% agreeing that recreational marijuana should also be federally legal. Between the vast majority of adults in the United States in favor of legalized weed and recent legislation that hopes to make it official on a federal level, it seems only a matter of time before every state on this list is covered by federal legalization.

Kansas

Most Popular Strain: Durban Poison

Kansas is one of the few states that have yet to provide any legalization, including medical. However, Kansas lawmakers are working to bring the issue into focus in 2023. For now, Kansas' favorite strain, Durban Poison, is enjoyed illicitly. Durban Poison is a Sativa strain that originates from South Africa and is known for its energizing high and euphoric, uplifting effects. It's excellent for boosting focus and, because of this, is often used to promote daytime productivity. It is roughly 20% THC and has spicy, herbal flavors and a pine and sage aroma.

Kentucky

Most Popular Strain: Green Crack

Like Kansas, Kentucky has yet to legalize any form of cannabis, and Kentucky has also recently appointed a Medical Cannabis Advisory Committee to help create a pathway to legalizing medical cannabis soon. While we're excited to see what happens when cannabis is legalized in Kentucky, for now, we have to recognize Green Crack as the reigning champion of strains in the state. This beautiful strain boasts 17% THC and incredibly energizing effects that provide a focused and talkative state. It tastes like mango and citrus and has very tropical aromatic tones.

Louisiana

Most Popular Strain: Gorilla Glue #4

Medical marijuana was legalized in Louisiana in 2019, but no such laws have been passed for recreational cannabis. As of 2022, Louisiana's most popular strain is, like so many other states, Gorilla Glue #4. Also referred to as GG4, this highly-rated hybrid strain is an aromatic experience that boasts earthy, piney aromas and flavors. With 20% THC, GG4 produces a relaxing, calming, full-body high that will likely leave you sleepy and incredibly chill. It's great for taking right before bed and is often used to combat the side effects of anxiety and chronic pain.

Maine

Most Popular Strain: Blue Dream

One of the 19 states to have legalized both medical and recreational cannabis, Maine's most popular strain as of 2022, is the ever-popular Blue Dream. Named after its very-berry blueberry flavor profile and sweet aromatics, Blue Dream is an incredible strain for reducing stress and anxiety and is often used for relieving chronic pain. Its effects are very enjoyable, producing a full-body relaxation and uplifting, creative high brought on by its 18% THC content.

Maryland

Most Popular Strain: Green Crack

Maryland has a successful medical cannabis scene, and while weed has been decriminalized, recreational weed has not yet been legalized. The state's most popular strain, at the moment, is Green Crack. Also known as Green Crush and Mango Crack, this Sativa strain is known for its bright, citrusy flavors and tropical aroma. It provides a euphoric, talkative high that causes extreme focus, which is excellent for daytime productivity. Because it is also excellent at curbing the side effects of stress, depression, and anxiety, it makes sense why this is such a popular strain in a state with legalized medical cannabis.

Massachusetts

It hits with 19% THC and is infamous for its skunky, overpowering diesel aromas and flavor profile. This is not a strain for beginners.

Most Popular Strain: Gorilla Glue #4

Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, and since then, Gorilla Glue #4 has found its way to the top of the charts and is currently the most popular strain in the state. It is also a great-tasting strain, with strong flavors of mint and lemon with a heavy candy aroma.

Mississippi

Most Popular Strain: Chem Dawg

Mississippi recently became the 37th state to legalize medical cannabis. In February 2022, the Medical Cannabis Act was signed into law, and since then, Chem Dawg has quickly risen as its most popular strain. The source of many other popular strains like Sour Diesel and OG Kush, Chem Dawg is known for its almost overpowering diesel-like aroma and intense flavors. Like its flavor profile, this strain's effects also pack a massive punch, producing a powerful, full-bodied high with an intense cerebral experience that results in a hazy, creative, and euphoric high.

Missouri

Most Popular Strain: Blue Dream

Recreational cannabis is still illegal in Missouri, but the state did decriminalize weed in 2014 and legalized medical marijuana in 2018. As of now, Blue Dream is the state's most popular strain. Like many other states, Blue Dream tops the charts, likely due to its incredibly sweet aromatics and namesake blueberry flavors. In addition to tasting delicious, this strain is great at reducing chronic pain and anxiety, and it produces a full-body relaxation paired with a creativity-boosting, euphoric high.

Montana

Most Popular Strain: Montana Silvertip

New Hampshire legalized medical marijuana back in 2013 and decriminalized possession of up to 21 grams of cannabis in 2017, but the state has yet to legalize recreational weed. Trainwreck is currently New Hampshire's most popular strain. With 17% THC, it should be no surprise that this hybrid provides a euphoric high that boosts creativity and overall mood. It's excellent for reducing the side effects of migraines, chronic pain, and arthritis - it makes sense why it's so popular in a medical cannabis-only state. On top of everything else, Trainwreck tastes like sweet and spicy lemon and has an almost earthy, piney aroma.

New Jersey

Most Popular Strain: Girl Scout Cookies

Like Minnesota, New Jersey's favorite cannabis strain is Girl Scout Cookies (GSC). This strain provides an energetic, euphoric high that will have you visiting the kitchen frequently for snacks. It boasts 19% THC and is commonly used in a medicinal capacity because of its ability to treat chronic pain, depression, loss of appetite, and nausea.
