The Most Popular Strains in Each State: Part 1

Published on 9/11/22

Each state has a different best-selling strain that you're most likely to find in most dispensaries due to various factors. Are you curious about what the most popular weed strains are in your state? Take a look at the first part of our ongoing series about the most trending strains in each state!

Cannabis in the United States

In this series, we'll go through the most popular cannabis strain in every state - that doesn't mean that cannabis is yet legal in every state in the United States. Cannabis is still federally illegal, and a total of 13 states have yet to legalize it in any capacity. That being said, a whopping 37 states have legalized medical marijuana as of June 2022, 18 of which (plus Washington, D.C.) have legalized recreational marijuana. New polls show that 90% of Americans believe medical cannabis should be legalized, with 60% agreeing that recreational marijuana should also be federally legal. With this vast majority sentiment and recent legislation looking to legalize marijuana, it seems only a matter of time before every state on this list will be covered by federal legalization.

Alabama

Most Popular Strain: Girl Scout Cookies

Alabama is one of the most recent states to legalize medical marijuana, and Girl Scout Cookies has quickly become one of the most trending strains available there. Also known as GSC for short, this hybrid hits hard with 19% THC and an energizing, euphoric high known for giving some serious munchies. It's a popular medical cannabis strain across the United States, good for treating chronic pain, nausea, appetite loss, and depression. This strain tastes fantastic, like a sweet minty lemon delight, and smells like a heavy, candied dream.

Alaska

Most Popular Strain: White Widow

Cannabis is fully legalized in Alaska, where White Widow is easily one of the most popular strains available. This hybrid strain comes in with about 15% THC and produces an energetic, potent, creative-inducing high that's great for being productive or social. It has a woody, sandalwood aroma with notes of flower and pine. White Widow is popular amongst medical users since it's great for easing muscle pain, anxiety, and depression.

Arizona

Most Popular Strain: Green Crack

One of the four states to legalize recreational marijuana in the 2020 election, Arizona has had a couple of years to make Green Crack one of the best-selling strains. This Sativa strain is best known for its energizing effects that are ideal for a day high. Its flavor profile is very sweet and tart, with a tangy mango aroma and flavor, and its THC concentration is roughly 17%. Additionally, this strain is thought to help alleviate the side effects of fatigue, stress, and depression.

Arkansas

Most Popular Strain: Sour Diesel

Although medical marijuana has been legal in Arkansas since 2016, recreational marijuana is still illegal there. For medical users, Sour Diesel is one of the best go-to strains on the market. This Sativa strain weighs in at 19% THC and is great for medical consumers, with the ability to help alleviate depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. It is highly energizing and causes fast-acting, cerebral effects, and it has a heavy flavor profile akin to diesel (its namesake).

California

Most Popular Strain: Gorilla Glue #4

Like Colorado, California is one of the great cannabis capitols of North America, and it, too, has an abundance of weed for recreational and medical use. Out of all the available strains, Gorilla Glue #4 is quickly picking up the pace to become one of the most popular strains. This hybrid strain, despite its 20% THC, is fairly calming and results in a euphoric body high. It is thought to be ideal for treating depression, anxiety, and chronic pain, and it smells like sour candy and tastes thick and earthy. It makes sense why this is considered the best California strain.

Colorado

Most Popular Strain: Chemdawg

Since Colorado is considered one of the cannabis capitols of North America, it's difficult to name the best Colorado strain, but we can say that Chem Dawg is one of the most popular. This perfectly-balanced hybrid is known for a high that starts with lots of cerebral energy and then fades into a full-body high. It hits with roughly 19% THC and is perfect for a nighttime session. However, the state shares a favorite strain with its neighbor Alabama, Girl Scout Cookies, which has a high THC concentration of roughly 19%. This hybrid is known for its heavy candy aroma and minty, almost citrusy, lemony flavor. It's popular in the medical scene, able to treat depression, appetite loss, and chronic pain.

Most Popular Strain: Sour Diesel

Hawaii has had legal medical marijuana for over two decades and was the first state to legalize it through a legislative process in 2000. However, like Arkansas, even though it's had medical cannabis for a while, it still hasn't legalized recreational weed. And like Arkansas, one of Hawaii's most popular strains is Sour Diesel, a Sativa strain that averages a THC concentration of 19% THC. It's thought to help alleviate depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. It is highly energizing and causes fast-acting, cerebral effects, and it has a heavy flavor profile akin to pungent diesel.

Idaho

One of the 13 states that have not yet legalized cannabis in any capacity, one of Idaho's favorite strains happens to be Cinex, which is not an incredibly common strain in other states.
