Unfortunately, Florida has not become a tourist destination for cannabis and the laws remain strict. Anyone caught with 20 grams of marijuana or less without a valid MMJ card may be charged with a misdemeanor and up to $1000 fines and the possibility of up to a year in prison. For those found with anything more than 20 grams, they would be subject to felony charges and 5 to 30 years in prison. There is some hope, as the state did legalize cannabis for medicinal use in 2016. Those with qualifying conditions may legally purchase a pre-determined 70 day supply of cannabis. MMJ cardholders should note that it is only legal to consume cannabis in the privacy of their own home or with permission from the homeowner. It also remains highly illegal to consume cannabis and then drive.
