Fort Wayne is a northeastern Indiana city built along the St. Joseph River. It’s centrally located between four major metro hubs: Chicago is just three hours to the west, Indianapolis is about two hours to the south, Columbus is just shy of three hours to the southeast, and Detroit is about two and a half hours to the northeast. Besides the easy access it offers to a variety of major cities, Fort Wayne stands on its own as a beautiful oasis of modern city planning and culture. The downtown is stunning and easily walkable, there are parks everywhere (including a gorgeous walkway along the river), and both the food and brew scenes are up-and-coming. It might not be the most well-known city, but it’s definitely worth putting on your list.
The one thing that Fort Wayne doesn’t have a chance to do well, unfortunately, is marijuana. Not only is all weed illegal in Indiana, but it is one of the strictest states when it comes to enforcing marijuana laws. In Indiana, if you are caught with any amount of marijuana (whether you have a medical card from another state or not), you could be given a misdemeanor, serve up to 180 days in jail and owe up to $1,000 in fines. The more you possess, the higher those numbers rise. There is, however, a growing legalization effort within Indiana lawmaker ranks and a large population of cities like Fort Wayne are in favor of legalizing medical and recreational weed – so, we are hopeful that Indiana will soon find itself more open to marijuana.
