Found in southwestern Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park, you can find the city of Livingston. As a small historical railroad and ranching town, Livingston became a centralized point in the Rocky Mountains as a direct result of the Northern Pacific Railway. To learn about some of the town’s history, the Livingston Depot is a restored railway station museum open. Unfortunately, this museum is only open from May to September, but there’s still plenty to do in Livingston. Looking to learn more? The Yellowstone Gateway Museum has tons of great exhibits on local and regional history for all ages. Visit picturesque Sacajawea Park along the Yellowstone River, perfect for enjoying a picnic lunch or a stroll along the river. For a bit more exercise, hike Pine Creek Trail for scenic views of waterfalls and streams to enjoy. Finally, end your day with dinner at Gil’s Goods. With a wood-fired oven, Gil’s pizza and baked goods are phenomenal. Even better, Gil’s makes all of their food in-house and focus on organic, locally grown ingredients with a modern farmhouse vibe.
Since Montana legalized recreational marijuana on January 1, 2021, the state is still in its early stages of deciding many of the specific laws and regulations when it comes to licensing dispensaries and more. Livingston’s weed laws are no different, but here’s what we’ve learned already. First off, as of January 1, adults over 21 can legally possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana flower, 8 grams of concentrates or several marijuana plants. While this is exciting for many reasons, it is important to keep in mind that recreational sales are still not legal in the state. I-190 allows Montana to start accepting recreational dispensary applications as late as October 2021, so recreational dispensaries won’t likely open until Spring 2022. Equally important, I-190 sets recreational marijuana sales tax at 20%. This income can help the state in the long run, splitting the revenues between the state general fund and for local public programs.

Currently, only medical marijuana patients can buy marijuana in Livingston at a dispensary. Recreational dispensaries will likely open in 2022, according to I-190.
