Like much of the marijuana laws in Montana, state and local governments still need to determine many of the specific recreational cannabis regulations in Columbia Falls. Beginning on January 1, 2021, an adult could legally possess an ounce of marijuana flower or 8 grams of concentrates. Additionally, they could legally grow several marijuana plants at home. Equally important to note, recreational sales are not legal yet in Montana. I-190 allows the state to hold off on accepting recreational dispensary applications until October 2021 and sets the timeline for those dispensaries to open back until Spring 2022. Finally, I-190 sets recreational marijuana sales tax at 20%. It divides 10.5% of the funds to the State General Fund and the remaining 9.5% back to local communities for public programs.
