Back in 2004, Montana legalized medical cannabis by ballot initiative. Quite some time later, in 2020, the state did it again with recreational marijuana passing I-190. Finally on January 1, 2021, that law went into effect. Along with the rest of Montana, specific cities like Libby have quite some time to figure out specific dispensary licensing laws and more. Lawmakers wrote I-190 allowed those over the age of 21 possession of up to an ounce of cannabis flower or 8 grams of cannabis concentrates. Additionally, growing several plants at home is also legal. Later in October 2021, Montana will begin to collect recreational dispensary applications and will approve them in 2022. Finally, I-190 sets Montana’s recreational marijuana sales tax rate at 20%. This allows a generous flow of money to the state general fund and for public programs and services at the local level.
