New Jersey became the 14th state to legalize medical marijuana back in 2010. In November 2020, the voters spoke and passed recreational marijuana with 67% support. According to Public Question 1, this law was supposed to go into effect on January 1, 2021. Due to debates between lawmakers about topics like possession charges for minors. A few days later on January 12, Gov. Phil Murphy said the state was very close to finally passing the law, but still hasn’t passed it yet. Until those lawmakers finally pass the law, nothing changes. So currently, only medical marijuana can legally be sold in the state, and MMJ patients can possess up to two ounces of cannabis products. Anyone else who is caught possessing can be fined or even jailed.
