Located in the northwestern corner of New Mexico, Farmington is only an hour away from the Four Corners of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. One of the larger cities in New Mexico and built right along the beautiful San Juan River, Farmington is home to a unique blend of modern culture and ancient historical influences. Many incredible museums throughout the city highlight the region’s rich history, including the Museum of Navajo Art & Culture and the Sherman Dugan Museum of Geology. If you’re visiting from out of town, you can stay in underground cavern hotels or camp at one of the dozens of nearby campgrounds. In addition to eclectic city vibes, nearby attractions like Lake Farmington, Navajo Lake State Park, and the Angel Peak Scenic Area are perfect day-trip options for anyone looking for adventure. All of this along with great local wine, spirits, and eats makes Farmington a very worthwhile place to visit.
Farmington also benefits from several medical dispensaries. Farmington’s medical dispensaries are open from 10 AM to 6 PM on most days and you can also grow up to 16 adult plants at home if you have a medical marijuana card (so long as they aren’t grown within sight of the public). New Mexico legalized medical marijuana in 2007 and just recently decriminalized marijuana in April 2019. Under the new laws, adult-use weed is still illegal, but anyone caught possessing up to a half-ounce will only be fined a $50 civil fee and serve no jail time or be given any criminal charge. We are hopeful, however, that recreational weed will be legal in New Mexico within the next year. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has been an outspoken advocate for legalization and has placed the issue in 2021’s legislative docket. Please check in here for updates on New Mexico’s marijuana laws and legalization status.
