Just 45 minutes north of the Texas/Mexico border, Las Cruces is a small town surrounded by natural beauty. Las Cruces is positioned on the edge of the Chihuahua Desert and is only an hour’s drive away from the Gila National Forest to the west and the Lincoln National Forest to the east. This city is ideal for anyone wanting to get away and experience the tranquility of the desert and some vibrant local New Mexico culture. There is a wine trail that includes a large collection of local vineyards and breweries (all with stunning outdoor patios with scenic desert views), along with a “Walk of Flame” green chile trail for those looking to find the spicier side of Las Cruces. With amazing food, local drinks, and immediate access to the grand American southwest, Las Cruces isn’t a city to pass up.
Las Cruces also benefits from being in a state with an excellent medical marijuana program. New Mexico legalized medical marijuana in July 2007 and recently decriminalized marijuana possession up to half an ounce. Under new laws, anyone caught with up to half an ounce of marijuana will receive no criminal charge or jail time, just a $50 civil fine. Please note that marijuana is decriminalized, not legalized. It is still illegal to possess marijuana if you do not have a valid medical marijuana card. New Mexico’s Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is an outspoken advocate for cannabis reform, however, and has put legalization on the state’s list of legislative priorities for 2021. We are hopeful that New Mexico will soon join the growing ranks of states with fully legalized weed. For now, however, you can easily find medical marijuana at local dispensaries throughout Las Cruces, most of which are open between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM (hours vary by store).
