Found in Kent County only 12 miles from downtown Providence is Warwick, Rhode Island. As the third-largest city in Rhode Island, Warwick has so much to offer so there’s never a dull moment. Located in the heart of southern New England, Warwick provides easy access to tons of beautiful coastlines and historic sites. Of course, Rhode Island is also known as the Ocean State and home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Located on Narragansett Bay, Warwick features 39 miles of coastline within its borders. Conimicut Point hosts a scenic waterfront park and kayak launch site that’s perfect for a picnic with bay views after a long day of kayaking around Conimicut Lighthouse, while Goddard State Park offers trails, horseback riding and more. Finally, Warwick is the perfect place to do some retail therapy. Also known as “The Retail Capital of Rhode Island”, Route 2 in Warwick features two large malls, eclectic boutiques and restaurants for all to splurge a little.
Like the rest of Rhode Island, the road to cannabis legalization has been a rocky one. Unfortunately, cannabis in Warwick is only available for medical marijuana patients. Since 2006, any Rhode Island resident with Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism, Cachexia, Cancer, Chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, Glaucoma, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, Nausea, Persistent muscle spasms, Post-traumatic stress disorder and Seizures, certified by a doctor could qualify for an MMJ card. Since 2009, Rhode Island MMJ cardholders could purchase up to 2.5 ounces of medical cannabis from dispensaries every two weeks. Later in 2013, the state successfully decriminalized possession for recreational marijuana use. As it stands, adults caught possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana are subject to a $150 ticket. In 2020, there were hopes that Rhode Island would legalize, but like most things, the COVID-19 pandemic stopped progress on that front. We’re hoping 2021 is the year for recreational cannabis legalization in Rhode Island.
