Despite California being one of the first states to legalize medical cannabis, recreational marijuana wasn’t legal in the state until 2016. Luckily, the purchase and use of cannabis in the state is still highly normalized. Any adult over the age of 21 can buy cannabis from a licensed retailer, but make sure you understand the laws before consuming in California. Retailers range from storefront dispensaries or delivery services, as both are legal in the city. Similar to other cities, it is illegal to use cannabis in public spaces, buildings, and events. Marijuana is only legal in private residences or one of the city’s dispensaries with a smoking lounge. However, it is important to note that even though the State of California allows for the use of recreational cannabis, the use of cannabis on federal lands (national parks, airports, etc.) is still illegal. Additionally, driving under the influence of cannabis is also illegal.
