Take a trip back to the Wild West while visiting Durango. A small city found in southwestern Colorado near the New Mexico border, Durango is best known for its massive mountains, unbeatable skiing and historic railroad. With fun for all ages, this town is way more than just a former mining town. The Historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad System, used to carry more than $300,000,000 worth of precious mined metals, now allows passengers to ride aboard this open-air train to experience the mountains and dramatic canyons of the San Juan National Forest. Visitors can truly experience the frontier by visiting the Gold Medal streams found in the Animas River. Film buffs will love Durango’s reputation as the Hollywood of the Rockies, as the city was the setting for more than 30 classic films including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and more!
Since Colorado’s recreational cannabis industry began in 2014, both the recreational and medical use of marijuana is legal and highly normal in Durango. Anyone over the age of 21 can purchase marijuana from a recreational dispensary with a government-issued ID, or 18 with a valid MMJ patient or caregiver card. Getting marijuana in Durango is incredibly easy with several recreational and medical dispensaries open within the city, as well as online pickup services. Specifically, recreational adults 21 and up can only possess up to 1 ounce of flower at a time or equivalent amounts of concentrates or edibles. Additionally, it is illegal to consume cannabis in public and people should only consume in the privacy of their home. Though the state of Colorado legalized marijuana smoking lounges, the city of Durango does not currently permit any. For more in-depth information, check out our Colorado state cannabis guide!
