Considered one of the gateways to New Mexico, Hobbs is a southeastern city located just a few minutes from the Texas border. Built in the middle of the high desert, Hobbs is a city of rich diversity at the intersection of cowboy, farming, and Hispanic culture – it is a western town through and through. Golf courses, dozens of local parks, and beautiful nature trails exemplify Hobbs’ connection to nature, and the Southwest Symphony and the Western Heritage Museum are examples of the city’s rich modern culture. There are several casinos to visit, a few quality microbreweries, and some killer local restaurants that highlight the city’s Hispanic influences. Hobbs is a great place to start a New Mexico adventure, but it’s also a chill town worth visiting on its own.
Hobbs also has a small handful of medical dispensaries you can enjoy if you have a valid medical marijuana license with the state. New Mexico legalized medical marijuana in 2007 and decriminalized weed in April 2019 for up to a half-ounce of possession. If caught with less than half-ounce of weed, a person will be charged a $50 civil fee and serve no jail time or have anything put on their record. While decriminalization does not mean adult-use marijuana is legal, we are hopeful that New Mexico will soon join the ranks of Colorado and California. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is a strong advocate for legalization and has put the issue on the 2021 legislative docket. For now, however, only those registered with the state’s medical marijuana program can legally possess and use marijuana. Hobbs’ medical dispensaries are open from 10 AM to 6 PM most days. Additionally, medical marijuana patients are allowed to grow up to 16 mature plants at your residence, so long as they are grown out of sight of the public.
